LyX (pronounced "lick") is  a powerful document processor with the motto "what you see is what you mean". The program is well-respected, and commonly used for technical documents, including theses. It is well-known for it's beautiful mathematical notation, and its ability to structure documents. The program has a high learning curve, but the benefits that effort repays are well worth it, especially for technical documents.
